Why Voting for anyone other than Republican or Democratic presidential candidate is a waste of time.

I was watching Real Time with Bill Maher on HBO Friday evening as they kicked off their new season that will run now until Election Day, November 2nd, 2004 here in the United States.

I was watching Real Time with Bill Maher on HBO Friday evening as they kicked off their new season that will run now until Election Day, November 2nd, 2004 here in the United States.

The panel this day consisted of the Autistic Child (aka Michael Moore), Representative David Dreir, and former Prime Minister of Canada A. Kim Campbell. Rep. Drier sat on one end, Moore on the other and (I'm not quite sure of the proper title, the website says 'Right Honorable') Kim Campbell in the middle.

I swear to you, it was like watching to raving lunatics fighting over a brain with one of the most intelligent, thought provoking people in the middle wondering what circus show she got on.

I don't know much about Canada, other than they are North of us and for some reason people make fun of them. I've seen a few things here and there like on Bowling for Columbine that made the point that Canadian government officials seem to be much more intelligent and well spoken than those of us here in Americas, but blew it off.

However Michael Moore and Bill Maher brought Ralph Nader on to talk to him. Ralph and Bill both got on their knees and begged him to get out of the damn race, and then Ms. Campbell stopped them both, and basically said.

Sir, I honor you and respect you highly, but you're an idiot for doing what you doing based on how the US Government works and are only helping those you despise maintain their authority. People that vote for you because of your leadership & abilities are only wasting their vote because your system of government does not value the vote for president beyond the election of the president. No matter how many votes you win, in the end you will still loose more than the election itself.

She then spent several minutes explaining how in Canada you could vote for an alternate party, and win by getting seats in Parliament. And that national health care got into the government because of a third party (didn't catch the name) and it's now a majority party. But since he's maverick with no house/senate seats running as well he's basically destroying the election in favor of the republican party much like Perot did for Bush in 1992.

To be honest, I was so floored by her statement and how right it was. I never thought of it that way. I was duly impressed by her mannerisms and her thought process behind such a volatile subject here in the United States. I'd also dare any of our elected government to be able to explain out their system of government works in such an articulate manner that she did.

Nader blew them all off, kept waving some book that the cameras ignored around and probably will continue his quest. Bill Maher gave him a picture of OJ and said something to the effect of 'to remind you that a hero can do one thing and be saddled with it for life' which I thought was a rather strong statement in of itself.

Needless to say, I was impressed with this episode, Michael Moore non-withstanding.
