From the Dell Doesn't Get It department....
This quote explains it in a nutshell: "Dell
believes that its relatively low prices on the music players and also on its
plasma TVs, which start at $2,299, will help win over consumers."
news.com has an article talking about the new introduction of
the Dell DJ 5 an iPod Mini competitor, or so they'd like to
think.I am not the biggest fan of the
'mainstream press' when it comes to computers these days, because most of them
are bought on a daily basis. This article is no exception. This quote
explains it in a nutshell: "Dell believes
that its relatively low prices on the music players and also on its plasma TVs,
which start at $2,299, will help win over
consumers."If it were about the price,
the iPod and iPod mini would never sell. It's not about the price, it's about
the style, ease of use, and everything else but the price. People ranted and
raved about the price of the iPod Mini. Then you couldn't find one for four
months because of demand, and they still move daily. I've got co-workers who
never once looked at an Apple computer who own the iPod Mini because they love
the size, and the iTunes Music
Store.Dell on the other hand waits for
someone to come out with something, make a quick knock off of it, and sell it
for less and supposedly this works. They may have succeeded when computers were
$5000 without a $1000 monochrome monitor but things have changed significantly
these days. Computers are about as ubiquitous as they're going to get and now
innovation and style are what is going to sell them.
The DJ 5 compared to the iPod Mini is
like trying to sell the Dodge K car against the BMW Mini. Sure they're both
cars, they both go from point A to point B but the Mini sure looks a lot more
fun...
