My New iPod 40GB Generation 4 has arrived

My new iPod arrived on the doorstep today. I'm upgrading from a now almost two year (to the day actually) 20GB iPod I bought right before I graduated from college (at 31 yrs of age). I was able to use my employers purchase program to save a few $$ on it, but I would have bought it at full price because my 2G one is a bit worse for the wear. Not that I won't sell it on eBay to anyone who wants it with a full disclosure about the headphone jack being a bit weak and all.

The 40GB model is thinner than my 20GB model. I'm too lazy to take some pictures to show it, but if you have seen an iPod before looking from the top the 40G is thinner by about the thickness of the 'white part' of the iPod. A welcome downsize.

I also managed to get the remote & case for free thanks to Apple's little snafu when I ordered things. It was nice of them to cough it up. I really wanted the case the most as a protector while my iPod travels with me in the computer bag, and the remote was handy on my old iPod on occasion. But with the remote I got a second set of headphones. I'm waiting on the Etymotic ER-6i 'special edition' headphones to come out. These are built with the iPod in mine with some added oomph to the low end. Originally they were to be available 'late july/early august' but just as I surfed over there to get the link it now says 'mid August'

The web is covered with a plethora of articles about the new iPods. One of the most surprising articles I've seen though was on O'Reilly. They link to this article written buy a guy who has bought every model of iPod except the newest and they title it 'I Think I'll Sit This iPod Out' which makes it at first sound like a diss against the new article when it's in fact some younger guy that probably works for his money now considering he bought the original iPod, the 2nd Gen, the 3rd Gen, and then the mini. Now all of the sudden he doesn't want the 4G iPod.

Wonder why. Plus it just doesn't seem that bright because he started at 5, 10, 15, and then 4 going to the Mini. I know there were 20, 30s, and 40s in there. Why such a small increment? Oh well, as this blog itself proves anyone can have an article published these days ;)

It turns out the volume problems with my 20GB were/are headphone related, because putting in the headphones into my 2G and 4G the volume is the same. I needed more space anyway but that's good to know because when I sell it now it's not so bad compared to a bad headphone jack. I guess I could have tried it out on some other headphones but I didn't ever have any easily available.
