Thoughts on the new iPod 4G Model
Getting the new 4th generation iPod for a
combination of reasons including wanting to use a dock, the media reader options
so I could partner a bigger disk with my Canon D60 camera, and just well I
wanted it.
OK. So I've had my original iPod since August of
2002 and have grown quite used to it. Getting the new 4th generation iPod for
a combination of reasons including wanting to use a dock, the media reader
options so I could partner a bigger disk with my Canon D60 camera, and just well
I wanted it.
But after comparing old
vs. new, did they 'improve' it too
much?
We're a two iPod family now.
For my wife I knew style over substance would win so I picked her up a Pink Mini
for her birthday. So I now have the ability to compare a 2nd generation 20GB
iPod, 1st generation 4GB iPod mini, and the 4th generation iPod. I had a
strong dislike for the 3rd generations button placement, made it hard for me to
one thumb it, and really I saw no need for a new one at the
time.
After messing around with the new
iPod, I guess I have one complaint. The click wheel 'looks' weird. It just
doesn't 'flow' with the iPod as well as the 2nd gen's placement of buttons did.
The iPod mini's click wheel looks nice, maybe it's the offset of the color
versus the white but the grey 'pad' across the stark white face of the iPod
seems to be out of place / sort of 'cheapy' looking. It's really just the color
I think. The buttons themselves works very nicely and it's very intuitive. It
just looks rushed and rather 'un-Apple'
like.
The new LCD is nicely done and
doesn't look much different from my old iPod and the dock is really a nice
feature. I'm going to play with the media reader here in a little while and
copy some photos from the 4th of July off finally to the iPod to see how
things
work with that. Looks good though I
was surprised to see it needed batteries (four AAA). At least it came with
them. Nothing more annoying than a device that needs batteries not coming with
it.
I'm getting ready to put my 2nd
generation iPod up on eBay here soon probably. Not sure why I'm waiting to do
it. Probably because I need to take pictures of it so I can properly show it.
The APP paperwork came yesterday to enable the warranty on the new iPod and I
got that taken care of this morning. Very simple process via the web which was
very nice.
All in all I'm happy with
the new iPod. I think I'm going to pick up a dock kits with the audio cables so
I can attach it to my stereo at work and then get an extra cable for the power
charger. The one thing I would change about the dock is to make it a repeater
for firewire so I could attach something else after it on my single firewire
cable on the Powerbook. I've got a little 20GB portable drive I use for
backups. It's got two ports on it so it lets you continue the chain. If I ever
get an iSight I'm pretty much SOL to use the iPod and the iSight at the same
time unless I want to use a hub, and that just clutters things up. Too bad the
iSight isn't wireless.
