Coastal Tour

I thought I'd share one thing from our coastal tour.

One of the things we ended up doing was taking some ferry's along the coastline of North Carolina.

Here's a map of the coastline:

That picture I took is from Ocracoke to Cedar Island ferry. It was a whopping 2 hours but as you can tell from the map if we wanted to get from there to Wilmington (not on the map, but west of Cedar Island) we would have had to drive back to Whalebone Junction and back into NC in order to get there, and at 6PM EDT that would have been one hell of a drive.

I would highly recommend for other folks attempting this to not do it our method though, for we got really really lucky. We left Virginia Beach at 11AM or so EDT. Stopped for lunch around Kill Devil Hills, and then just drove. We hit the Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry really easy, but when we got to Ocracoke (ok, deserted island feel if it wasn't for the highway, there is NOTHING from the ferry exit until just before the next ferry entrance) and we got there 30 seconds before the Ocracoke-Cedar Island ferry was leaving, and the next one wasn't for another two hours.

While it wasn't bad at all ride, having to wait 2 hours for the next (and last) ferry off the island for a 2 hour and 15 minute ride to Cedar Island would have put us in Wilmington at about 2:00AM. So make sure you know what the schedules are (and uh, that you even need to take a ferry) should you want to drive down the coast line.

It was gorgeous, and it was raining the whole way down. It stopped raining long enough for us to ride the two ferrys and see a gorgeous sunset and rainbow. More pictures are here on fotki. Including some of the rainbow edges that sort of turned out.
