Cable Insanity

Well needless to say I didn't troubleshoot much over the phone the 'my computer doesn't work' thing and it appears that everything is fine and Angi's computer apparently was hosed up, and as near as I can guess maybe the wireless flaked out a bit on her machine.

Not quite sure what it is with the folks at cable companies, phone companies, and the like.

Last week I decided to try and save a bit of cash and switched to cable modem. The guy came out on Sunday and installed the modem but wasn't able to get a signal. So he ran a new line. However I was a bit annoyed because the line was just buried (along with cutting through my sprinkler line) not six months ago when they finally came out and do it.

Apparently some guy comes out today, and scoffs at the fact we need a new line, changed a connector or something and disappeared. Angi calls me because now her computer doesn't work. I watched the guy test the cables, etc, and I saw the low signal and the lack of a modem locking on so I figured the folks that hosed up the digging of the cable could have potentially nuked the cable. Plus we've been experiencing crappy signal on the pay channels/digital cables.

Well needless to say I didn't troubleshoot much over the phone the 'my computer doesn't work' thing and it appears that everything is fine and Angi's computer apparently was hosed up, and as near as I can guess maybe the wireless flaked out a bit on her machine. I didn't get to check it out because a power flicker fixed it. On one hand I want to get APC backups for various outlets around the house but at the same time, hey, it fixed it :)

The frustrating thing though was the extreme lack of customer support Angi received. She is feeling a little 'useless' I guess because money is tight and such and when she couldn't get the cable company to do a few simple things without an hour on the phone she got rather frustrated. I wish people would get their crap together about customer service. This 'outsourcing' thing and the 'not my problem' crap seems to be systemic in everything technology related.

If everyone switched to Macs maybe this would go away :)
