Picked up the Tank today. Forgot how expensive
it is to get started
Picked up the tank at aquarium outfitters today,
and then talked my way out of buying anything else. At first I just wasn't
sure what I wanted to do, but then each time he explained something to me it
really pushed me away. I wasn't comfortable with what they were suggesting
and decided I didn't want to do anything. I told them I was traveling and
didn't want to start anything, and that was my intention at first.
After bringing the tank home and
setting it on the stand, I decided on what I wanted to do and we went looking
for other aquarium stores. The first one the map had us drive to that sold
kent marine products - I never found it. Gee, thanks
Mapquest.
The second one we almost
missed due to where it was hidden but it turned out to be a decent store at
first glance. Really large selection of marine animals and they had a few of
the harder to keep species in the tank and they all looked really good. So I
picked up some reef sand, protein skimmer, heater, power heads and the light bar
for the tank from them. Ouch that was
expensive.
So now the water filter is
dribbling small amounts of water into the tank as it slowly fills. I've got
one power head down low circulating what water has gone in there so far. I put
54 gallon equivalent of salt in it. This salt I bought in like 1999 too. Never
opened the tub o salt and it was still bone dry. So at least we know the thing
was airtight at least.
Will let the
pumps run and everything looking for leaks, then when the light bar I ordered
comes in and I get back from my tour of the US all week I'll pick up the light
bar, and see what I'm going to do about the live rock and live sand I want to
get.
