Harry Potter-the early years
Calvin made his first trip to the ER on March 5th.
Calvin was playing with Tom and grabbed the glass light cover globe over the light on the ceiling fan. LIttle man pulled it down on his head, shattered it and slicing up his head. We took him to the ER where they just put on some steri-strips, they probably should have put in a few stitches. He promptly ripped the steri-strips off his head a few days later.
He's a tough little guy and doesn't seem to be having any problems with it. He will probably have a nice Harry Potter-esque scar on his forehead.

Dat Way
We've been confused for a few weeks now. Whenever Calvin sees a flag, he gets very excited and starts screaming, "dat way, dat way", we finally figured it out.
Last week we figured out that "dat way" was what he was saying when looked at a flag. We still weren't sure why though. Then everything clicked when he was watching Toy Story 2. There's a point in the movie where Buzz Lightyear is standing in front of the American flag giving a very impassioned speech about saving his good buddy, Woody. At the end of the speech, he points and says "That Way" and his group of rescue toys set off.
Tom and I discussed that it was rather funny that to understand our 2 year old, we needed to filter most of what he says through Toy Story and Toy Story 2 plotlines and dialogue. Guess he could have worse reference points.

Woody's Roundup
You Have a Friend in Meeeeeeeeeeeee!
Just recently, Calvin has become completely obsessed with the Toy Story movies and characters. He's been walking around with the ripped front cover of the DVD box set saying, "Woody, Buzz Wightyear" for weeks. Tom decided to set the little man up. This past week, large Woody and Buzz Lightyear action figures arrived. Calvin packs them around wherever he goes. The big surprise is coming on Halloween-Tom got him a Buzz Lightyear costume. This will be the first Halloween that he's been big enough to go trick or treating. We'll see how it goes, hoping that he's not freaked out by the costume.

For those of you who don't watch Toy Story 2 at least twice a day this is at the end of the movie where 'Wheezy' the penguin is singing 'You've got a friend in me' Sinatra style and does the last belt out of 'You've..got a . FRIEND IN MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE'
Calvin's Rendition is in the film clip.

Water Baby
Calvin's developed a new love/hate relationship with water.
Calvin loves his bath, loves to splash in the tub, play with the toys, the whole routine seems to bring a smile to his little face. So, I was pretty shocked a couple of weeks ago when he became hysterical when we tried to go in to the hotel pool. He was so freaked out that Tom had to take him back to our room while I swam with the little fish Becca.
A week later, I'm out watering a tree in the front yard while the kids were playing. Calvin walked right in to the spray of water. I was sure that he was gonna freak out again. He looked a little dazed, shook his head and stepped right back in to the spray. He absolutely loved it. He was soaking wet and really seemed to enjoy it when I turned the nozzle down to more of a mist.

Table Dancing
Do other table dancers get paid in apple juice and graham sticks, or just Calvin?
Calvin is a climber monkey, if it's scalable for a 21 month old, I can just about guarantee that he'll be at the top of said object. His new favorite destination is the top of any table. In the dining room, he likes to sit on the table cloth and spin around. In the "eating nook", he likes to walk around the table and turn over the salt shaker and create snowy landscapes.

Apple
Calvin has decided to chat a bit more and to his father's delight, the new word is Apple.
I was so excited the other morning, I asked Calvin if he wanted more apple and he replied with "App pul". I grabbed Calvin and the apple pieces off his high chair tray and ran up to show Tom this amazing feat. Tom watched, grinned and then told me, "Oh, yeah, he's been saying that for a while, when he was in here the other day I kept pointing at the Apple logo on my computer and saying apple and he started repeating it".
Calvin is a little slower in the speech department than his sister. I attribute this to a couple of different factors: 1. He doesn't have as much one on one time with adults, 2. He doesn't need to talk because I interpret his grunts and get him whatever he wants, 3. He started doing physical things earlier, so it's ok if speech is slower 4. Kids are just different
As I hear him try and imitate words, I am suddenly reminded to curb my private tourette's like outbursts for fear that he may be right around the corner. I try not to curse, etc when the kids are around, occassionally when I've done something painful like crack my elbow on the newel post coming down the stairs with an armload of laundry, I'll let loose with a string of profanities that I didn't even know existed.
So, if you see me wandering around saying Biiiiirrrddd, you'll know that I'm not doing my Thumper imitation, just trying to teach Calvin all the fascinating new words that are about to enter his vocabulary.

Big Boy
Thoughts on my baby boy turning 18 months old.
Calvin just turned 18 months old and the results of his checkup (34 1/4 inches tall, 24lb14oz, head circum. >97%) confirm what I already know, he's a Big boy. I reflect back on my baby. Calvin is in that adorable in-between stage, he's not really a baby anymore, but not officially a toddler either. Apparently you don't earn the toddler moniker until you've hit the ripe old age of 2, although he's been 'toddling' around for the past 4-5 months.
I may be a little biased, but he really is the sweetest boy. He has a grin that lights up the room. And his love of routine makes my little borderline OCD heart swell with pride and joy. We're still working on the talking aspect, he jabbers constantly, but even I can only understand about 1/4 of what he's saying. I prefer to think that he's saving up for a great oration instead of just being slow to speak. Oh, and he's all boy! The way he rushes through everything, things flying left and right, nothing left untouched by his chubby little hands. While often frustrating to the one that has to clean up all these messes, it's also endearing, my little boy is an explorer, an adventurer in life.
As much as I'm looking forward to doing all the "girlie" things with his big sister Becca, I'm equally excited about playing catch and searching for bugs in the back yard with Calvin.

Life's a Potty!
The joy a big bowl of water can bring to a small boy.
We currently have houseguests. Houseguests that aren't used to having to close the bathroom doors and/or close toilet seats. Calvin is in heaven! I'm not sure when his fascination with the potty began, but oh, the splashing of the toilet water is pure delight for the little guy. He had a few highlights today. My grandma caught him in the upstairs bathroom, dipping the bath toy cups in to the toilet and then dumping the water in the tub, leaving a trail along the floor. Later in the afternoon I caught him gleefully slapping the water in the 1/2 bath downstairs, just grinning at the sound and feel, I'm guessing. About an hour later, I hear my Aunt Mary laughing and turn around to see Calvin covered in toilet paper from head to toe like a little mummy with a veil and train. Ah, good times! Thank God, I power cleaned all the toilets before our guests arrived!
