Continued Commentary on Blogging and 'Journalism'
Scott kick things off with a link to a former TV Reporter turned Blogger who points out that Blogging, or the Blogosphere or whatever word we want to make up to apply to it is predominantly white and male, just like TV Reporters
Earlier Brian and I got into a big disagreement over Apple's stance vs. the three sites that seems to have kicked off this big discussion.
What I find amusing is that this has now started down the 'white man vs. everyone' thought process. I guess since I'm a 'white man' I'm part of 'the man' that has been forcing 'the minorities' down my whole life, though I'm not sure how I do it.
When I get up in the morning, slowly, I must have amazing super powers of oppression because I slept until 7AM instead of getting up at 5AM, and apparently us White Men get more done in oppressing the minorities in our sleep. I mean while I slept yesterday things went wild in Atlanta by a minority, and the pressure of being The Man got to some guy in Wisconsin and he went hog wild.
I guess it amuses me how people struggle to find patterns of oppression in all things. Battlestar Galactica (the new version) doesn't have enough black people (never mind they got just about everyone else including a hispanic guy in charge of everything and a woman as the president). I mean only a subordinate is black, and then the prisoners were black, but no one important is black. Never mind that it's filmed in Vancouver. Wonder what their population mix is of the 'races'.
On a tangent of that last sentence, I hate the word 'race'. Scientifically speaking we are all Homo Sapiens. My 'white' organs work just fine in an 'black' person, and vice versa. If I was bleeding out and needed a pint o blood from a 'chinese' person there wouldn't be any concerns (however manufactured by some idiot) on if we were compatible, because we are completely compatible because we are both Homo Sapiens.
But I digress.
i guess I have a problem with all this 'finding racism' in things. I really don't think a lot of people get up every morning and think 'Hmm, how can I keep them down' and spend their day thinking up ways to oppress someone. I think people need to shut up and get over it.
I've got a great job, and I'm white. Whoo hoo. But I'd bet dollars to donuts my 'great' job is laughed at by many a Black, Chinese, Hispanic, Indian, Arab, Jewish, Woman, or any other 'minority' for how stupid I am to do what I'm doing because they're either A) Happy, or B) making millions more than I ever will because they're doing their own thing.
Do I think there are White dominated areas? Sure. TV could be one of them though on my news here there isn't a white guy as the anchor (locally) on the NBC affiliate (don't know the name yet, can't look it up to link). I don't think the few times I watch TV news 'damn, glad there's a white guy telling me this crap'. I more think 'damn, it is too bad no one reports any more and only spins things'. Maybe that's part of The Man plan that I'm not in...
Am I enlightened? Doubt it. Naive? Most likely. I probably will be labeled 'racist' because of what I've just said, and if someone wants to enlighten me as to how this is 'racist' I'd really like to know. I'd also like to know what is so bad about being Jewish, Mormon, or Gay too while you're at it because growing up I didn't have a whole lot of them in Kansas so they were the one that everyone got all quiet and would say something stupid like 'oh, They're Mormon' like that explained it all but I had not idea what being 'Mormon' meant so I never understood why whatever they said/did/walked by applied to that given situation. Just because there are three sisters 2 years apart doesn't make them any stranger than the next family. Mine would be just as weird except my brother broke the spell and was a boy...
