It's No Wonder Star Trek is Dying
Those of you that know me well, all three or four of you, know that since a small child growing up in Kansas I've been addicted to Star Trek. My first BBS Alias: Trekkie, My License Plate on my first Car, Trekkie.
For those of you who don't know me, there is one distinction between picking that name and the people personified by the moniker 'Trekkie'. I've never attended a convention, I've never dressed up as a character, and while I do know a bunch of the technojargon out there I've never tried to apply it to real life short of wishing a transporter existed when I need to travel from Raleigh to San Francisco to NYC in two days.
I'm an occasional reader of WWdN. Mr. Wheaton has posted an entry highlighting a fact that TV Guide has a poll on 'who the most annoying character' is and at the time of his original post he was winning, wrongly in my opinion.
So his plea for everyone to go vote and save his character's moniker of 'most annoying character' I popped over to add my one vote to the mix, and basically I realized why Star Trek has died on television.
Which then got me off on a rant real fast.
Specifically, of the poll there are two entries (first off, give us an option not to vote for 'who'd you like to have a romantic evening in the holodeck' and then list the same sex characters in a separate question, I mean come on I can't think of a guy that I'd want to spend a romantic evening with and don't want to have to vote for one to save Wil's character. But I digress. One of my most hated things about recent 'trek' (asied from two of the most evil people on the planet responsible for the death of Star Trek) is that the low brow sexism that has begun / did creep into the series.
Specifically a female lead couldn't be in the show unless she wore a sprayed on outfit made of spandex and big tits. She could be portrayed as a smart person, but she had to wear the most revealing outfits, or get put in a 'decon chamber' where people have to rub goo on each other, or other sickening things.
Hey, and I'm a guy. Maybe I'm a weird one, but I like a woman for her brains. If she looks nice that's always a good benefit but if you're in it for the looks there are millions of examples of how the body aging can completely destroy that
Back to the voting, I can't believe Hoshi Sato isn't winning for the most annoying character. I mean come on, she's a whiny scared little bitch of a girl that is part of Human Kind's first major exploration into space. An Luxwanna Troi annoying? Obviously they never read Q-In-Law by my favorite Trek author Peter David, also the author of the fantastic New Frontier series of Trek. I think that book alone put Luxwanna in a whole new light and was one of the few books that had me laughing out loud, almost as much as "How Much for Just the Planet' By John Ford.
But the voting who you'd want to spend an evening on the holodeck with, ugh. I know it's supposed to be fun and all but I'd like to think in the future while we expand our minds and all we won't make women spray on their uniforms.
